UrTrees is a citizen science project, available as a website and app, that facilitates the recording, mapping, creation of 3D models and measuring of trees. UrTrees is provided by the University of Strasbourg (Unistra) in partnership with the CNRS and The Open University (OU). The UrTrees website and app are hosted by Unistra.
The statement on this page sets out how the Unistra ('we' or 'us') uses and protects personal information that we collect from you, when you use UrTrees, in compliance with European Union ('EU') and UK data protection requirements. The University of Strasbourg (Unistra) is the data controller in relation to the processing activities described below. This means that the Unistra decides why and how your personal information is processed.

When you register with the UrTrees application you choose a username to identify yourself and give your height. The username you choose is part of your public profile (for example, it appears in the rankings), but your height is private and is only kept on your phone, not on our server.

As part of our public task we provide UrTrees, a citizen science application and website that facilitate the recording of tree data which can be used for research and academic purposes. In doing so we may make UrTrees records available to UrTrees partner institutions (i.e. CNRS and OU), affiliated project partners, other institutions and researchers; national and international repositories.
If you contact us, we use your email address to respond to any queries you raise. We may also use this to contact you about changes to the UrTrees website or app, important alerts or updates.
We may make UrTrees records available to other institutions and researchers, national and international repositories as set out above.
We may transfer your information to a successor body if the ownership of UrTrees were to change. We may also transfer your information if we are under a duty to disclose or share it in order to comply with any legal obligation, to detect or report a crime, to enforce or apply the terms of our contracts or to protect the rights, property or safety of our users. However, we will always take steps with the aim of ensuring that your privacy rights continue to be protected.
Generally, information you provide to us is stored with all UrTrees data on secure servers which are located within the UK and EU at the Unistra.
If we transfer your information outside of the UK and EU, we will take steps to ensure that appropriate security measures are taken with the aim of ensuring that your privacy rights continue to be protected as outlined in this policy. These steps include imposing contractual obligations on the recipient of your information or ensuring that the recipients are subscribed to 'international frameworks' that aim to ensure adequate protection. For example, we would ensure that a US based supplier has signed up to 'Privacy Shield'.
If we collect your information, the length of time we retain it is determined by a number of factors, including the purpose for which we use that information and our obligations under other laws. We will hold your information on our systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant activity.
